See also Warning section. Plecanatide is used to treat certain types of bowel problems (chronic idiopathic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome with constipation). It works by increasing fluid in your intestines and helping speed up movement of food through the gut. Plecanatide may improve stool texture and lessen symptoms such as straining and feelings of incomplete bowel movements. This medication must not be used in children younger than 6 years because of the risk of serious side effects.
Diarrhea may occur. If this effect lasts or gets worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Stop taking this medication and tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: severe diarrhea. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
