Evolocumab is used to help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood. For people who have high levels of LDL, it is used along with a proper diet, alone or other LDL-lowering treatments (such as statin drugs, ezetimibe, LDL apheresis). Evolocumab is also used by people who have heart disease to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as monoclonal antibodies. It works by improving how well your body gets rid of LDL cholesterol. In addition to eating a proper diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet), other lifestyle changes that may help this medication work better include exercising, losing weight if overweight, and stopping smoking. Redness, pain, or bruising at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
